Rift in the Races Now Available

cover_only_web_SmallWell, all the parts are in place and its finally ready to go. The book is available for Kindle now (here’s the link right to it) and Nook (link here), and will be shortly for paperback on Amazon. Kindle updates pretty quickly, they said it would take 12 hours, and yet it’s already up. Nook says awhile too, and they did take a day and a half on “Auction Yard,” so you never know, but it was up within four hours. The paperback version is hard to say. They tell me it could take “5 to 7 business days” but for the first book they said that and it took about eight hours. I actually didn’t know that and didn’t even promote the dang book for a couple of days, and had all my “new release” marketing set for January 15 of last year, and the book was out by the 9th. Rather than do that again, I’ve decided to roll it out as it becomes available. So, there you have it, book one is up and running, even if some parts are running slightly sooner than others. Rift in the Races: Front Cover Revealed

I said at one point that I would release the preview of the front cover art for Rift in the Races when I got the proofreader copies in. Well, today I got the proofreader copies, so as a man of my word, here is the front cover (you can see a small and big version in The Galactic Mage art gallery here on the site). I’m still holding the full cover secret for another few days, so you’ll have to wait to see the whole full-cover image—which includes the outcome of Altin’s spell you see starting up right there, plus what he’s shooting at, etc. but there it is. Dude You Suck at Updating Your Blog

Yes, I know, I suck at updating my blog lately. I do. I’ve been a shameful sort of blogger the last month and a half, but I defend myself by pointing out that the only reason anyone ever strolls by my blog is to find out about my books or to be amused by some very low-quality drawings of myself doing something absurd or embarrassing. The latter is down a few paragraphs, and for the former, I can say that the dip in blog production (and book review production) has come upon the rise of book production instead. As evidence, I present the fact that, while my editor, Joyce, has been scouring the pages of Rift in the Races, freeing it from as many typos and grammatical ineptitudes as possible, I have been furiously working on the third book of the series, which will be titled Hostiles. And guess what… it’s almost done, at least the first draft is. Continue reading Dude You Suck at Updating Your Blog

Rift in the Races Progress Update: September

Rift in the Races is now with my editor, and I have begun working on the third book (so that the wait between book 2 and book 3 won’t be anywhere near as long as the time between 1 and 2). My editor says she can have it back to me in eight weeks, which, from the time I gave it to her, puts that around November 9th. I will be getting chunks of her suggestions back and working through them as she goes, so I can actually be done with her revisions at almost the same time she is done making them, or within a few days. So, in theory, I’ll have an edited copy of the manuscript done by let’s say November 12th or, just for reality’s sake, let’s call it the 15th. Best Fantasy Book Cover Artist of Our Time: Cris Ortega

So, I have all the art files for the new book cover now. All I can say is, “Wow!” While I confess to already being a total Cris Ortega fan, especially after how amazing her work was on the cover of The Galactic Mage, I am so completely blown away with how much control she has of light and texture and, just, everything. She’s got a level of mastery that it’s hard to comprehend—and I’m sure I don’t actually comprehend it, but it’s fun to try to fathom anyway. She’s definitely one of the top fantasy book cover artists working today. Continue reading Best Fantasy Book Cover Artist of Our Time: Cris Ortega

It’s Book Blurb Time Again

A few long-time readers will remember back to when the first book, The Galactic Mage, was in progress, back when I was still using the old Blogspot blog. At one point, I had to write the book blurb for the back of the print edition (and for the description on Amazon). Well guess what, it’s that time again now for Rift in the Races.

So, for those intrepid helpers and critics out there, here’s what I have come up with after a few days working on it. Below is the latest version of the blurb. Let me know what you think, in specifics or generally. Please don’t be shy; trust me, I can take criticism. If you think your response will be too mean or too long for the comments here (or on Facebook), feel free to email them to me instead so you can keep your anonymity email to John@Daultonbooks.com or just via the Contact Us option on the website menu to the left. And again, don’t be shy. So, said, here it is: Continue reading It’s Book Blurb Time Again

First Draft Done: Round One Revisions Underway

I got to type “The End” on the first draft of the second book in the Galactic Mage Series on Saturday. It felt great. Saturday was a pretty hardcore writing day, too, nearly 9,000 words in one sitting. I was on a tear and really wanted to get it finished, and now it is. (Happy dance!)

For anyone who wants to follow along on progress easily, I’ve added a page in the Bookstore (menu on left) for Rift in the Races too. I mostly put it there so that people who come to the site looking for the sequel can find info about it that doesn’t require slogging through my blog or finding info on Facebook, but it also makes a neat and tidy place to pop in for the short version updates. Galactic Mage Book Two – Cover Art Underway

So, because I am the luckiest bastard on the planet when it comes to cover artists extraordinaire (took me three stabs to spell that, oh you cursed squiggly red line you!), I can now officially announce that cover art is underway for Rift in the Races (book 2 of The Galactic Mage series).

I’ve had the concept for the cover pretty well chewed on, thought through, mulled over, sketched out, and any other verb-preposition combos you can think of that speak to that sort of thing for quite some time, so when Cris Ortega contacted me and told me she was ready to fire up book two cover art, I squealed like a little girl and rapidly sent off my sketches.

I suppose I should be more cool than that, be (pretend I am) all laid back. It’s probably better marketing strategy to tell you something different, something like:

Of course I yawned when I got Miss Ortega’s note and then swirled the cognac in my huge crystal snifter while saying something delightfully droll to the two enormous Irish Wolfhounds reclining loyally at the foot of my over-stuffed leather throne chair. Then I laughed, “Hah-hah,” in that throaty way fancy highbrow artists do when sitting before a crackling fire and enjoying the lofty airs of being too cool to get excited about this stuff anymore.

If I were trying to cultivate my authorial coolness factor, I would say that. However, I am not there yet, so I still love this stuff, and I’m still stoked to have an artist of Cris Ortega’s caliber working on my book cover again!
